Research Interests
Dr. McClellan-Green's research focuses on the study of natural and man-made toxins in the marine environment and their effects on the metabolic activities of marine organisms. Biochemical and health effects of exposure to anthropogenic c ompounds, contaminants and toxins can drastically alter the development, metamorphosis, reproductive capacity or ability of exposed organisms to utilize nutritional sources. The consequences of exposure to these anthropogenic compounds may be reduced water quality, declines in available habitat, decreases of vital fisheries (both finfish and shellfish) and human health effects related to ecosystem exposure. Current research themes include (1) examination of the molecular and biochemical pathways involved in endocrine production, metabolism and environmental disruption, (2) the effects of anthropogenic exposure on uptake, distribution and metabolism including oxidative stress in marine/estuarine species (3) determining the effects and consequences of exposure to antifouling compounds and booster biocides on non-target species and (4) the characterization of detoxification pathways (cytochrome P450s) in marine species.
